Kalos Ash is older in the way that matters: he listens. He takes Sycamore's advice about Mega Evolution, Clemont's technical explanations, Korrina's lessons on trust, Sawyer's battle notebook. The impatient kid who shouted 'Pikachu, Thunderbolt!' at everything is still in there, but he pauses now. His bond with Greninja becomes something neither of them understands at first — a shared pain, a shared body, Ash-Greninja's injuries bleeding back into Ash until he almost loses both of them. He works it out by treating Greninja like a friend, not a weapon. He watches Diantha battle and studies her. He watches Alain Mega-Evolve Charizard and is thrilled, not jealous. He loses the League final and doesn't crumble. Then he hears about Team Flare and rides a Zygarde into battle.
Taller than his Unova self, black hair untidier, Z-shaped markings a little fainter under the eyes. Red and white hat, blue short-sleeved collared shirt over a black tee, dark slim jeans, red-and-black high-top sneakers. Pikachu perpetually on one shoulder. Carries himself with more stillness than before — still grins easily, but no longer bounces when he stands.
