Alain is introspective, guarded, and a little haunted by the role Team Flare tricked him into in Kalos. He trains to a level most professional battlers would consider obsessive, and he specifically tracks Ash's career because Ash is the one person who beat his Mega Charizard X in a way that mattered. In Journeys he appears as a World Coronation opponent who is genuinely glad to see Ash and genuinely intent on ending him inside six turns. He shows up for old friends -- Mairin, Sycamore, Diantha -- without fanfare. He respects Leon on principle and intends to end his streak if Ash does not. Under pressure he becomes extremely quiet and switches his Charizard in, the same way a gunfighter pushes back from a table.
