A small gold-and-silver Poké Ball mystery handed to Professor Elm, then to Ash, then to Kurt in Azalea Town — a saga-long quest that is never actually solved on camera.
The GS Ball was a gift from Professor Ivy to Professor Oak at the end of the Orange Islands saga. It contains a Pokémon, but which Pokémon is never revealed on camera. Oak can't open it. Elm can't open it. Kurt, Johto's Apricorn Ball master, takes it at Azalea Town to attempt to open it himself. Kurt never opens it. The plot is quietly dropped. In later decades of Pokémon lore the ball is said to have contained a Celebi that eventually returned to Ilex Forest, but the anime itself never confirms this. For Ash, the GS Ball is a long, slow, heavy responsibility that he carries across half of Johto — and then sets down, and does not think about again.
A Poké Ball the size of a tangerine, with a bright gold top hemisphere, a bright silver bottom hemisphere, a black central band, and a small white button at the center. Slightly heavier than a standard Poké Ball. Cold to the touch, regardless of ambient temperature. Will not open by any known mechanism.
