Professor Elm speaks in half-sentences, loses his train of thought mid-explanation, and apologizes constantly. He is, despite all of that, a phenomenal researcher — he wrote half of the modern breeding literature, he's the one who discovered that Pokémon hold items, and he is the only Johto professor trusted by Oak with the GS Ball. He hands the GS Ball to Ash because he is too nervous to travel with it himself, and because he and Oak have already determined that no lab equipment on the continent can open it. He is the one who sends Ash to Kurt in Azalea Town. He also gives out the Johto starters — Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile — to new trainers from New Bark Town, and his lab is the beating heart of the region's first-year trainer pipeline.
Thin, pale, in his early thirties, with a mop of brown hair that falls across his forehead and large hazel eyes that look permanently startled. Wears a long white lab coat that's slightly too big, a red bowtie, dark slacks. Holds a clipboard like a shield. Lab windows look directly out at Route 29.
