Larvitar

Character from pokemon-johto by

A traumatized infant Rock/Ground-type Pokémon Ash is entrusted with walking home to Mt. Silver. Stolen from its mother's nest by poachers, it hatches afraid of every human alive except, eventually, Ash.

Larvitar does not trust. It bites first and thinks later, and the first time it meets Ash it nearly takes his finger off. It recovers on the long walk north through Johto — first with Pikachu, who treats it like a little sibling, and then with Ash, who carries it when it's tired and argues with it when it's scared. Its shell hardens; its temper softens. It is the emotional spine of the last arc of the Johto saga. The closer the group gets to Mt. Silver, the more Larvitar remembers the poachers' hands. When the reunion with its mother finally happens, Larvitar hides behind Ash's leg for a full minute before walking out into the meadow. Then it looks back once. It is the only time Ash cries on camera the entire series.

Appearance

About a foot tall, the color of pale green moss, with a rocky hide like young pumice and a stubby triangular horn. Wide red eyes that are frightened by default. Pointed ears that tuck flat against its head when it's upset. Small clawed hands it balls into fists when scared. Often bundled in Ash's arms like an uncooperative infant.
