The rainbow-feathered phoenix of Johto legend, long believed extinct, which circled over Ash's head on the very first day of his journey. In Johto, Ho-Oh is finally glimpsed again — on the Tin Tower, above the Whirl Islands, in a bell-note and a feather.
Ho-Oh does not speak in words. It sings — a single long note that resembles a bell, heard only by those it chooses to hear it. It is considered the king of the Legendary Beasts it resurrected from the Burned Tower's fire, and the guardian-spirit of the Tin Tower in Ecruteak. It was thought extinct for centuries after the Tin Tower's destruction. In Johto, Morty believes it is returning, and Ash — the boy it flew over on Route 1 — is the reason it flies again. Its Rainbow Wing and Silver Wing are artifacts scattered across the region. A Rainbow Wing at the end of the saga is what Ho-Oh finally accepts back, and when it does it circles Ash once and is gone.
Enormous Flying/Fire-type bird with brilliant red plumage, gold and green feather accents at the wings and tail, a long gold crest, and a hooked ivory beak. Its wings are each ten feet across. In flight it leaves a trail of rainbow light and small drifting golden feathers. Ancient eyes — yellow, vertical-pupiled, older than the Tin Tower itself.
