Gary speaks in a low, lazy drawl that hides an encyclopedic memory. He baits Ash with nicknames and then answers Ash's questions seriously when no one is watching. In Johto he has shed most of the obnoxious teen-celebrity act — the purple cheerleaders, the pink convertible, the highlight reels — and replaced it with a genuine interest in Pokémon as a field of research. At the Silver Conference, he and Ash finally have the battle they've been circling since Pallet Town. Gary brings a team built with care: an Umbreon, a Nidoking, a Blastoise. Ash wins. Gary accepts the loss with a handshake and, off-camera, a gift — a new Poké Ball, a half-confessed goodbye. After Johto, Gary will give up trainer battling and apprentice under his grandfather as a researcher. Johto is the last arc where he calls Ash 'Ashy-boy' and means it.
