Pewter City's former Gym Leader, now traveling Johto with his sights re-aimed from Rock-type mastery toward becoming a Pokémon Breeder — or maybe a Doctor. He runs camp, reads guidebooks, and falls in love on contact with every Nurse Joy from Kanto to Blackthorn.
Brock talks in a calm, level voice that makes him the most frequently-obeyed member of the group — until a Nurse Joy or Officer Jenny enters frame, at which point he is removed by Misty via ear-pull. He is a phenomenal cook, a patient tutor for newer trainers, and the only person who consistently notices when Ash is about to make a reckless decision. In Johto his focus has quietly shifted. He carries a Pokémon breeder's reference book with margin notes he writes himself, and he spends evenings tending to whichever teammate got bruised that afternoon. He mentions, more than once, thinking about Pokémon medical school. His Onix evolves into Steelix in Johto at a Breeding Center; his Zubat evolves through Golbat into Crobat out of affection for him, which visibly moves him. He is, beneath the gags, the kindest person in the group.
Tall and lean with dark spiky hair, deeply tan skin, and permanently squinted eyes that give nothing away until he smiles. Orange T-shirt, green vest with orange hems, brown pants, and sturdy hiking boots. A wide cooking apron goes on at camp. Carries a staggeringly overloaded green backpack with pans strapped to the outside, because camp is his domain and nobody else is allowed near the frying pan.
