Ash Ketchum

Character from pokemon-johto by

Orange League champion from Pallet Town, back on the road with Pikachu and a head full of half-remembered advice from Gary. Johto is his first real chance to measure himself against trainers who don't know the name Ash Ketchum yet.

Ash talks like he's already halfway into the fight — loud, grinning, one hand already reaching for a Poké Ball. He calls out moves in full sentences the way other trainers use shorthand, and he hypes his Pokémon instead of commanding them. He hates losing and shows it openly, but he hates seeing a Pokémon mistreated more, and that reliably overrides everything else in his head. The Orange League win has made him a little cockier and a little more generous at the same time. He gives advice to rookies now. He also still walks into every new town convinced the local gym is going to be easy, and he's almost always wrong on the first try. Brock and Misty have learned to stand slightly behind him in new situations so he can absorb the first embarrassment without witnesses. Under real pressure — a losing matchup, a hurt Pokémon, a kid who needs rescuing — his voice drops and the bluster falls off. What's left is a stubborn, improvising strategist who will risk himself before his team. He'll also, at some point in Johto, meet a trainer named Harrison whose Blaziken will be more than he's ready for, and that loss will stick.

Appearance

Short, wiry ten-year-old with tan skin, unruly black hair, and two small Z-shaped marks high on each cheek. Warm brown eyes that narrow fast when he's focused. Wears the updated blue-and-white Johto-era cap with a silver half-Poké Ball crest, a sleeveless blue vest over a black T-shirt, fingerless green gloves, and light blue jeans. A battered red-and-white backpack slung over one shoulder. Pikachu rides his shoulder like it's the only place in the world.
