A city built inside an extinct volcanic caldera, accessible only by diving through the crater lake — home to Juan's Water-type Gym, the Cave of Origin, and the site of the Weather Trio climax.

Sootopolis is the quietest city in Hoenn and one of the most sacred. The caldera houses the Cave of Origin — the mythical birthplace of Kyogre and Groudon and the geographic point where the Red and Blue Orbs originally rested. Entry to the city is by Dive only; the caldera walls have no overland path. Most of the region's priests and water-type masters live here. The Weather Trio climax happens over Sootopolis in the anime — Kyogre and Groudon converge on the Cave of Origin and battle in the lake and sky above the caldera. The city evacuates as storm and drought waves alternate overhead. Rayquaza's arrival ends the fight. In the aftermath Sootopolis hosts an annual memorial marking the crisis day.

Appearance

A bowl-shaped caldera city, houses stacked in tiers up the inner crater walls like a Greek island, all painted blue and white. A round freshwater lake at the city's center, the surface calm even in storms — the walls shelter everything. Narrow staircase streets. The gym sits on an island in the middle of the lake. Above, only a ring of sky visible over the crater rim.
