Mauville City's Electric-type Gym Leader — a jolly, laugh-everything-off old-timer who runs the most mechanically complex gym in Hoenn and is also the only man in the region who built and then abandoned his own power plant.
Wattson laughs first and negotiates second. He treats his gym like an amusement park — mechanical doors, shocking floor panels, trap voltage routes. His Electrike and Manectric are younger and less mechanically minded than he'd like, but his Magneton is a veteran. He is widely rumored to be in semi-retirement and to train apprentices rather than run gym battles himself, but Ash challenges him on a weekday and he's there. Under the joviality he worries. Years ago he founded New Mauville, an underground power plant, and walked away when its generators went haywire and started attracting Electric-type Pokémon. He won't admit he caused the problem until Ash and Max help him resolve it. By the end of their visit he's back on his feet, laughing louder than ever, and running his circuit-loaded gym at full power again.
A short, barrel-chested older man with wild white hair sticking straight up, a bushy white beard, and a permanent belly laugh behind the grin. Wears a bright yellow jumpsuit with pocket-flaps on both hips, sturdy brown boots. Electricity sparks lightly across his beard when he laughs, which is most of the time.
