Tate and Liza are ten or eleven and already some of the most mechanically advanced Gym Leaders in Hoenn. They only battle as a pair — double battles against any challenger — and their Lunatone and Solrock move in telekinetic lockstep that most trainers can't even track. Tate finishes Liza's strategy and Liza finishes Tate's. When one of them is distracted, both of them fumble. Ash learns this the hard way. He has to go find a partner for the double battle and borrows May's Combusken; their match comes down to keeping Pikachu and Combusken in physical coordination the way the twins keep Lunatone and Solrock. Tate and Liza are gracious in defeat, hand Ash the Mind Badge, and invite him to a shared pancake breakfast their grandmother has been cooking for six hours. Their family runs the Mossdeep Space Center nearby.
