Ash's signature Electric Mouse, fried to a crisp by the truck ride into Hoenn and having to relearn half its moveset — but still the single most stubborn Pokémon on the team and the only one who's been with Ash since day one.
Pikachu treats Ash as a partner, not an owner — it refuses to go in its Poké Ball, sleeps on his pillow, and will bite anyone who tries to grab it. It's more patient with kids than adults, and unusually gentle with baby Pokémon. When it battles it talks constantly, a running commentary of 'pika pika pika' that the trainers around it have learned to read like weather. Losing its Thunderbolt to an electromagnetic overload at the start of Hoenn is a quiet ego bruise for Pikachu and it spends the first dozen episodes sulking through training drills with Brock. When it finally nails the move again, firing a Thunderbolt through a steel cage to save a Taillow flock, it cheers louder than Ash does. In the Weather Trio climax at Sootopolis, Pikachu rides on a Wailord's back to reach Rayquaza — tiny, soaking wet, still making the worst weather in history momentarily pause.
A small yellow rodent Pokémon with long pointed ears tipped in black, red cheek pouches full of stored electricity, brown stripes down its back, and a lightning-bolt tail. Lives on Ash's shoulder. Blue thundercloud of sparks when it's about to let loose. Right now, at the start of Hoenn, those sparks come out weak and stuttery — the magnetic shielding on the transport truck overloaded it.
