Norman

Character from pokemon-hoenn by

May and Max's father, Petalburg City's Gym Leader and Hoenn's Normal-type specialist — a stern but fair man whose Slaking is one of the single most frustrating Pokémon on the competitive circuit.

Norman takes his role as Gym Leader seriously to the point of rigidity. He won't give Ash an easy first gym match because a soft win wouldn't teach him anything. He shuffles his team between battles — Slakoth against rookies, Slaking against veterans — and he will grind a challenger down over twenty minutes rather than end a fight fast. He's a good father. He's just a father who expects you to earn his respect. When May tells him she wants to be a Coordinator rather than a gym challenger he's openly proud, which she did not expect. He and Birch coach May through her first Contest over videophone. He takes Max more seriously than most adults do and promises Max the Gym when he's old enough to hold it. His long rematch with Ash — Ash's fifth Hoenn gym — goes to full six-on-six and is one of the tightest matches of the entire Advanced Generation.

Appearance

A tall, lean man in his late thirties with short black hair parted in the middle and a single fringe identical to May's. Dark brown eyes, clean-shaven, square jaw. Wears a red short-sleeved shirt with a black collar, black pants, black shoes. Carries himself upright, always a step too formal, like a man who used to be in uniform.
