A ten-year-old rookie trainer from Petalburg City who only wanted her starter Pokémon so she could travel and sightsee, and who accidentally stumbles into a calling as a Pokémon Coordinator with a bright orange Torchic and a bandanna she refuses to take off.
May started this trip for the wrong reasons and she knows it — she told Professor Birch she was after 'free transportation,' not Pokémon. Then Torchic imprinted on her and everything got complicated. She's impulsive, emotional, eats her way through every new city, and cries openly when she loses Contests. She also gets back up every time. Harley can't break her. Drew can't embarrass her into quitting. She's warm with strangers and patient with her baby brother Max in a way she'd never admit out loud. She's intimidated by her father Norman and desperate not to be graded against him — which is why she refuses to challenge his Gym herself and sticks to Contests. Over the course of Hoenn she goes from being afraid of Poochyena to winning a tie at the Terracotta Ribbon Cup against Ash himself. By the time she leaves for Johto alone at the end of Advanced Battle, she's someone her old self wouldn't recognize.
