Max is the group's walking encyclopedia and he knows it. He'll interrupt Brock mid-sentence to correct a type matchup, then apologize five minutes later. He's close to every Pokémon he meets — Ralts, Jirachi, and any gym leader's starter — but he can't catch them because he's too young to carry a Poké Ball of his own. That gap between what he knows and what he's allowed to do is the defining tension of his journey. He hero-worships gym leaders, especially Brawly, Wattson, and his own father Norman. He bickers constantly with May the way only a younger sibling can — knowing exactly which buttons open which trapdoors. Underneath the precocious exterior he's a kid who cries at goodbyes, stands between his sister and Harley's mockery, and genuinely believes Team Rocket just need better hobbies. When Jirachi wakes up and befriends him at the Millennium Comet Festival, Max keeps the friendship secret from the others for a week because he doesn't want to share it.
