He's a former Grand Festival champion who won the Ribbon Cup with a Milotic years ago, and he incorporates Contest showmanship into his gym battles — his Water Pulses form rings, his Milotic's Iron Tail chains into a five-hit spiral. He took over from Wallace as Sootopolis Gym Leader when Wallace left to pursue Coordinator titles full-time. He's unfailingly polite to everyone — Ash, Team Rocket, even a wild Wailmer that wrecks his gym roof. He treats Water-types as performance artists rather than soldiers. His final match with Ash uses Seaking, Whiscash, Sealeo, Luvdisc, and Milotic in a five-on-five battle that serves as Ash's eighth and final Hoenn badge match. Ash wins by half a Milotic tail.
