Jessie is louder than the room. She bullies James, swats Meowth, pitches absurd get-rich schemes, and loses her temper about three times an episode. In Hoenn she surprises herself by loving Pokémon Contests — the costumes, the audience, the spotlight, the actual performance craft. She steals ribbons to qualify for the Grand Festival and, unbelievably, her Dustox and Seviper put on genuinely creative routines. May and Jessie are secretly each other's wildest rival arc. Beneath the vanity she loves her Pokémon more than she loves being a Rocket. She cries when she releases her Dustox into the wild. She defends James when he cracks. She plans heists that inevitably end with her, James, and Meowth flying into the sky with a trademark 'we're blasting off again!' — a ritual they've performed so many times they've written it into their contracts. In Hoenn they hit rock bottom at one point and have to work as a food stall before Giovanni re-signs them.
