Flannery has been Gym Leader for about a week when Ash challenges her, and it shows. She monologues threats at him she clearly rehearsed in the mirror. She mixes up her Pokémon's abilities mid-battle. When she loses the first time, she gets cocky and demands a rematch instead of giving Ash the badge. Norman has to come over and tell her, gently, that that's not how gym leading works. Under the posturing she's sweet and dedicated. Her grandfather was the previous Lavaridge Gym Leader and passed a month earlier — she's running his gym in his honor and trying to live up to a legend she never really got to know. She cooks hot-spring Pokéblock for her Torkoal and names her Slugma after extinct volcanoes. By the time Ash leaves with the Heat Badge she's humbler, and considerably better at reading a battle.
A tall teenager with long crimson-red hair tied into a high spiky ponytail with a blue band, side fringe falling across one eye, and matching red eyes. Wears a black crop top with orange trim, very short white shorts, a red sash at her hip, red boots. Moves like she's trying to be taller than she is.
