Drew is insufferable in the way only a talented thirteen-year-old can be. He gives May a rose after every Contest — 'for Beautifly,' he insists, and glares at anyone who smirks. He critiques her strategy in the tone of someone correcting a recipe and then mysteriously shows up to help when she's in trouble. Harley hates him because Drew refuses to play Harley's cruel games; he'd rather beat May fairly than humiliate her. Under the arrogance he's a working perfectionist. He learned Contests under Solidad and drops her name like armor. He takes losses personally and retrains for weeks. His Roselia-turned-Roserade is his partner in the way Ash's Pikachu is Ash's — he'd never say that out loud. When May ties with Ash at the Terracotta Contest, Drew smiles for the first time on camera. He went on to Johto after Advanced Battle and kept competing.
