Violet City

Location from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver by Game Freak / Nintendo

The City of Nostalgic Scents — a historic Johto settlement where Sprout Tower sways on purpose, monks train Bellsprout, and the first Gym waits at the top for trainers who've walked half an hour from New Bark Town.

Violet City sits at the intersection of three routes and serves as the first real destination for trainers out of New Bark Town. The Pokémon School here teaches the basics — it's run by Earl Dervish, who has an enthusiasm for exclamation points. Sprout Tower is the more interesting landmark: an ancient structure where the monks who live inside train Bellsprout and teach about cooperation between humans and Pokémon. The tower sways because the central column is a single massive Bellsprout — or so the legend goes. It's designed to flex during earthquakes rather than resist them, which is a philosophy the monks apply more broadly. Falkner's Gym is at the top of the city. He uses the low rooftops of Violet's traditional buildings as his training grounds, which means he's been thinking about aerial advantage since before he could fly anything.

Appearance

An old city with the feel of something preserved rather than developed. Stone paths, wooden buildings with traditional construction. Sprout Tower rises from the north — a multi-story pagoda that visibly sways in the wind, which is either architectural genius or alarming, depending on whether you know it was designed that way.
