Olivine City

Location from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver by Game Freak / Nintendo

A port city where you can hear the melody of the sea — where Jasmine tends a sick Ampharos in the lighthouse rather than run her gym, and where the S.S. Aqua connects Johto to Kanto by water.

Olivine is the game's reminder that the world extends beyond what you've already walked. The ferry port connects to Vermilion City in Kanto — a whole other region, six gyms and a Champion, postscript to an already complete journey. But the first visit is defined by the lighthouse. Amphy is sick at the top. Jasmine won't battle until the medicine arrives. You have to earn the right to challenge her gym by crossing the sea to Cianwood and back. The lighthouse itself is worth the climb regardless: it's a story-laden space, Jasmine's devotion made architectural. She won't let Amphy's light go out. The ships at sea depend on it. This is the whole character in two facts.

Appearance

A coastal city built for maritime commerce: wide streets, salt air, the lighthouse rising above the waterfront. The Glitter Lighthouse is the tallest structure and glows at night from Amphy's light at the summit. The port is active — ships move through regularly, sailors stop for supplies.
