Location from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver by Game Freak / Nintendo
Winds of a New Beginning — the smallest named town in Johto, population eleven, where the player lives, Professor Elm researches Pokémon Eggs, and every journey in the region starts.
New Bark Town is deliberately small — no Pokémon Center, no Pokémart, barely enough residents to remember everyone's name. Its slogan is 'Winds of a New Beginning,' which is either prescient or ironic depending on when you arrive. Elm's lab is the town's functional center, though the town predates the lab. The routes west into Johto begin here; the path back from Victory Road passes through here. The geography makes it a gate — everything leaves from here, and the player returns through here after earning eight Johto badges to head for the Elite Four. The player's home is here. Their mother is here. She will save money from their battle winnings and mail them supplies. She'll ask where they're going when they leave. This is the whole game compressed into one small town: a child leaving home, a parent watching them go, and the town staying exactly as small as it was.
A cluster of maybe a dozen buildings on the eastern edge of Johto, where the terrain flattens toward the coast and the grass grows tall on the routes heading west. The wind comes in from the sea and moves everything. Elm's lab is larger than any other building in town, lit from the inside even at odd hours.
