Mt. Silver is locked. Professor Oak gives you access after you've collected all sixteen badges — eight from Johto, eight from Kanto. It's the reward for doing everything the game asks, the door that only opens when you've finished. Inside: darkness, difficult terrain, and wild Pokémon in the Level 40-50 range that are harder than most of what you fought to get here. And then the summit — wide and open, with nothing at the center except Red. The battle is the point. He says nothing before it begins. He says nothing after. His team is the highest-level you've faced in the game: Pikachu in the high 80s, trained starter evolutions across all three types, Espeon, Snorlax. No easy matchups. After the battle, the credits don't roll. Red just stands there. You can fight him again. He'll never explain what he's doing on the mountain, because the game decided that the question itself is the answer.
A vast mountain range that defines the western border between Johto and Kanto. The cave system inside is dark — Flash is required to see, and even then the visibility is poor. High-level Pokémon inhabit every floor. The summit is cold, with the specific cold of altitude rather than weather. Red is at the top. He's been there a while.
