Johto is Pokémon's thesis on tradition and change. Every major city has an old name and an old purpose: Violet with its sages, Ecruteak with its towers, Blackthorn with its dragons, Mahogany with its ninjas. The Pokégear and the ultra-modern Goldenrod Radio Tower are the contemporary layer on top of this history. The mythology is unusually coherent for the series: the Burned Tower event — specific date, specific consequence, three named legendary Pokémon created by it — gives Johto a shared history that connects the gym leaders, the legendary Pokémon, the ruins, and the player's journey. You aren't just collecting badges. You're moving through a place that has been shaped by a fire that happened 150 years ago. Kanto is accessible post-game — Johto and Kanto share a landmass and a Pokémon League. The nostalgia loop of revisiting Kanto through Johto's lens (and Johto's improved technology) is the game's final gift.
A diverse geography: coastal lowlands in the west and south, dense forests at the center, mountain ranges in the north and east. Ten settlements ranging from New Bark Town (population eleven) to Goldenrod City (Johto's largest urban center). The landscape feels inhabited in an old way — not wilderness, but countryside that has been agricultural and sacred for centuries.
