Ecruteak City

Location from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver by Game Freak / Nintendo

The ancient city at Johto's spiritual center — where two towers stand across from each other, one still ringing and one in ruins, and where the legendary beasts were born from fire and resurrection seven centuries ago.

Ecruteak is built around two events that happened 150 years ago and haven't stopped happening. The Brass Tower burned. Three Pokémon died. Ho-Oh resurrected them as Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, then left. The Bell Tower was maintained as a landing pad for a return that hasn't come. The city feels like it's waiting. Morty waits at the gym. The Kimono Girls prepare for a ceremony. Eusine passes through periodically chasing Suicune. The Burned Tower is technically off-limits but Silver and the player both end up in it, which is where Raikou, Entei, and Suicune are sleeping — until you arrive and they scatter across the region. The Dance Theater is the other center: a traditional performance venue where the Kimono Girls train and where you can fight them, and where you will eventually participate in the ritual that summons the legendary birds. The city treats both towers as sacred sites. You'll vandalize both of them in the course of the game.

Appearance

Traditional Japanese city aesthetics: dark wood construction, curved roofs, stone paths. The Bell Tower rises ten stories at the eastern edge; the Burned Tower stands in ruins to the west. At night, the Ecruteak Dance Theater is lit from within, and the Kimono Girls perform for audiences who may not fully understand what they're watching.
