A quiet mountain retreat cut into a rock face in northeast Johto — where generations of Dragon-type trainers have lived, where Dragon's Den tests those who would claim the title, and where Clair waits at the final gym.
Blackthorn is the end of the Johto main road. Eight gyms in, last badge, and you're in a city that has been producing Dragon trainers for generations because of what lives underground beneath it. Dragon's Den is the subterranean cavern where Dragon-type Pokémon gather and where a shrine sits at the center, tended by elder trainers who evaluate challengers on criteria that aren't listed anywhere. Clair sends the player there after she's been defeated. The elders decide whether you're worthy. This is the game's final quality check before it sends you to the Elite Four. Lance and Clair both came from here. Silver trains here at the end. The Dragon's Den has a specific gravity — it makes everyone who passes through it either earn something or leave.
A city that feels carved rather than built — dark rock walls, narrow paths, the sense of altitude and isolation. The Dragon's Den entrance is at the edge of the city, behind the gym, and it leads underground into a space that manages to feel ancient even in context. A river runs through the lower district.
