The egg that Professor Elm's assistant presses into your hands in Violet City — a round, speckled object that requires care and footsteps to hatch, and that will become Togepi: the first baby Pokémon ever introduced, round and optimistic and structurally indestructible.
The Mystery Egg connects to the first major plot beat of the game: Elm sends you to Mr. Pokémon's house on Route 30, you get a phone call about a theft at the lab (Silver took the starter), and on the way back Professor Oak gives you a Pokédex. Then Elm's assistant in Violet gives you the egg. The egg is one of Professor Elm's research subjects — Pokémon breeding is his specialty, and Togepi's egg is a specimen he's studying. Giving it to the player is a natural extension of his research philosophy: see what happens when someone carries it. Togepi hatches with trust bonded to whoever is first to interact with it. In the anime this was Misty. In the game it's the player. The egg doesn't give you a powerful battle Pokémon — it gives you something that likes you, which is different.
