Red doesn't speak. Not to the player, not to anyone. His mother hasn't heard from him in months. The 'reason' given in-game is that he's training, but the game allows the silence to be stranger than that. He defeated Team Rocket. He defeated all eight Gym Leaders in Kanto. He defeated the Elite Four and Blue to become Champion. Then he left — not gradually, not with a reason, just gone. Up the mountain. The best trainer in the world, alone at altitude, with his Pokémon. The battle against Red is the hardest in the game: a Pikachu in the mid-80s, fully trained Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Espeon, Snorlax. You need all sixteen badges from two regions just to reach him. The fight has no dialogue before or after. You win (or lose), and he stands there. Whatever he's doing on that mountain — he's still doing it. The post-game climb up Mt. Silver is one of gaming's great moments precisely because the game doesn't explain it. No cutscene. No reward speech. Just the mountain, the cold, and a boy who got to the top of the world and decided to stay.
