Professor Elm

Character from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver by Game Freak / Nintendo

New Bark Town's scatterbrained, brilliant Pokémon researcher — the man who discovered Pokémon Eggs, who forgets to eat lunch when a hypothesis is going well, and who trusts two kids with starter Pokémon and an errand that turns into a two-region journey.

Elm is genuinely brilliant and genuinely distracted. He was Professor Oak's top student and credits Oak as a formative influence, but his specialty — Pokémon Eggs and breeding — took him somewhere Oak's generation hadn't explored. He discovered that Pokémon lay eggs, which sounds obvious in retrospect but wasn't. His lab in New Bark Town is small and perpetually warm from the incubators. He's sweet in the way of people who don't perform warmth but just have it: he worries about the starter Pokémon he gives away, he calls the player when he has information that might help, he gets genuinely upset when Silver steals from his lab. His wife says he forgets to eat when the research is going well. This seems accurate. His function in the game is to send the player on a chain of errands that becomes a world-spanning journey. He never quite realizes that's what he's done. He just needed someone to run to Mr. Pokémon's house on Route 30 and come back.

Appearance

Slim and slightly rumpled, with dark hair that looks like he ran a hand through it and forgot about it. Wears a white lab coat over casual clothes. His desk is covered in papers and Poké Balls. He looks up from his work with the mild surprise of someone who was three steps into a different thought.
