Character from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver by Game Freak / Nintendo
The cape-wearing, dragon-commanding Champion of the Indigo League — a man who stands for justice, helps dismantle Team Rocket at Lake of Rage, and is the final opponent between the player and the title. Cool, passionate, and occasionally slightly smug about the cape.
Lance is everywhere in this game. He's at Lake of Rage investigating the Red Gyarados when you arrive — he knows Team Rocket forced the evolution, he's collecting evidence, and he recruits the player to help take down the Mahogany Town HQ. Then he's at the Radio Tower. Then he's at the Pokémon League. He leads with the cape. He believes dragons are virtually indestructible and has organized his entire career around proving it. He's from Blackthorn City — same lineage as Clair, same traditions, but he went further. He's the Champion. His battle is the capstone of the main story: powerful Dragonite after powerful Dragonite, his team carrying the weight of everything Johto built up to. He's legitimately elite. He's also slightly formal in a way that reads as someone who takes himself seriously, which the player has earned the right to challenge by the time they face him. He believes trainers who mistreat Pokémon are not real trainers. He told Silver this directly after defeating him. It was one of the things that started Silver's change.
Tall and athletic with carmine-red spiky hair, sharp brown eyes, and a dramatic red cape that he wears in every official appearance without apparent self-consciousness. He looks exactly like what he is: someone who has been told they're one of the strongest trainers in the world and has not chosen to be humble about it. The cape is structural to the identity.
