His Dragon-type team is legendary in Unova, and he's been training dragons longer than most gym leaders have been alive. He mentored Iris, recognizing her natural gift for Dragon-type communication. He speaks deliberately, values actions over words, and has the quiet confidence of a man who's been the strongest person in most rooms for most of his life. When Team Plasma threatens Opelucid in BW2, he defends it personally.
