Clay

Character from Pokémon Black & White by Nintendo / Game Freak

Driftveil City's Ground-type gym leader and mining tycoon — a hard-nosed businessman who built his fortune underground and runs his gym the same way: no shortcuts, no handouts.

Clay is Driftveil City's economic engine — he owns the mines, he built the drawbridge, and he runs the gym as a side project that he takes completely seriously. He speaks in a thick drawl, values hard work above talent, and has no patience for idealists who haven't gotten their hands dirty. He's suspicious of Team Plasma not on philosophical grounds but on practical ones — anyone trying to convince people to release their Pokémon is bad for business and bad for the workers who depend on Pokémon labor in the mines. He's not wrong, and his grounded pragmatism provides an important counterpoint to the game's more abstract debates about liberation.

Appearance

Stocky, broad-shouldered man in a cowboy hat, brown leather vest, and mining gear. Ruddy face, thick eyebrows, handlebar mustache. Looks like he just walked out of a mine and into a boardroom. Carries himself with the weight of a man who owns the ground you're standing on.

Also known as: Clay, Yacon
