Oak speaks like a man who has been interviewed for television too many times — measured, warm, with practiced little jokes he lands anyway. He's the originator of half of what the Pokémon world considers basic science, and he wears the authority lightly; he would rather help a ten-year-old pick a Pokéball than argue a conference paper. His soft spot is Pallet's kids — Ash and Gary most of all — and the competitive pride between his own grandson and his neighbor's boy is one of his quiet pleasures. He invents haiku to describe every new Pokémon and most of them are bad. Under pressure — say, a Mewtwo-caused crisis — he drops the folksy act and organizes research and evacuation plans with a clarity that stuns young trainers who only knew him from television.
