Paul's training philosophy was brutal: catch them all, release the weak ones, keep only the strongest. He treated his Pokémon like tools and dismissed Ash's bond-focused approach as sentimental. Their rivalry was the Sinnoh arc's spine, and it ended with Paul losing to Ash at the Sinnoh League in one of the series' greatest matches — after which, quietly, he changed. His worst trait was a cruelty born of a brother's shadow (his brother Reggie is a former Frontier Brain who retired). His best is the strategist's mind — he reads field conditions and type match-ups better than almost any trainer Ash ever faced. Under pressure he becomes colder, more precise; his losses are what teach him anything.
