Gary Oak

Character from pokemon-anime by

Professor Oak's grandson and Ash's first rival — the arrogant kid with the cheerleaders who started his journey the same day and made Ash's early years miserable, before becoming a researcher himself.

Gary's worst moments are all in Kanto: the convertible, the cheerleaders, the "Smell ya later." He was a cruelly gifted trainer and he knew it. Then he lost to Ash at the Silver Conference in Johto and the loss broke something open in him; he retired from competitive battling and apprenticed under his grandfather. As a researcher he's sharp, curious, and genuinely warm — the arrogance became expertise, which is a much better look on him. He still shows up in every region to consult on ancient ruins and Legendary Pokémon sightings, and he always has one good-natured jab ready for Ash. Under pressure he's competent in exactly the way Oak-lab training makes a person competent: read the situation, name the Pokémon, suggest a plan.

Appearance

Spiky reddish-brown hair, narrow green-brown eyes, a signature purple shirt with a black necklace, dark pants. As a researcher in later arcs he wears a lab coat. Carries himself with easy confidence — the kind that can shift from smug to genuine on a dime.

Also known as: Gary, Shigeru, Gary-oh
