Ash Ketchum

Character from pokemon-anime by

The boy from Pallet Town who refused to quit — a trainer who spent twenty-six years losing leagues and learning, until he became Monarch of the World Coronation Series and, finally, a Pokémon Master.

Ash speaks at a run. He asks questions like a kid — "Whoa, what's that one do?" — even after beating champions, because genuine curiosity is his deepest trait. He loses spectacularly and then shakes hands and means it. Under pressure he gets louder, not quieter, and the louder he gets the more clearly he sees the field; his best calls are shouted into rain and static. He's loyal to the point of recklessness, and his Pokémon know it — they fight harder for him than for strategy. He trusts battered underdogs, listens to his partner before his plan, and refuses tools that other trainers use as a matter of course (Mega Stones he'll try, but he left Pikachu out of more than one evolution). He carries thirty gym-losses worth of humility and a Monarch's crown worth of belief. Around new trainers he becomes the mentor he never quite had — encouraging, never condescending, and always offering to battle.

Appearance

Lean and compact, perpetually ten-to-twelve-looking with messy black hair spiking out from under a red-and-white cap (the brim of which he's swapped five times across his journey). Brown eyes, two small lightning-shaped Z-marks on each cheek, and a wardrobe that rotates through blue-and-white jackets, fingerless gloves, and sturdy sneakers. Moves like a shortstop — light on his feet, always already leaning toward the next play.
