Poni Island's lightless gorge — ancient, sacred, and home to Pokémon that are not seen on any other island.
Vast Poni Canyon is older than any other landmark in Alola. The walls are carved with petroglyphs that predate even the island challenge system. Kahuna Hapu rode into the canyon as a child to rescue a stranded friend; her willingness to do that is what convinced Tapu Fini to make her kahuna. The canyon's depths are home to the Dragon-type Kommo-o clans and ancient Golurk that have stood guard for centuries. The trail through the canyon leads to the Altar of the Sunne. Ash's final grand trial, against Hapu, takes place on one of the canyon's plateaus. The canyon itself is treated by locals as sacred — trespass is a theological matter, not a legal one.
Enormous gorge splitting Poni Island's interior, sheer rock walls descending into perpetual shadow. Scrubland plateaus at the rim. Narrow switchback paths down toward the river at the bottom. Unusual Pokémon — Jangmo-o, Kommo-o, ancient Golurk — move through the shadows. A carved trail leads from the rim toward the Altar of the Sunne at its far end.
