Alola is the most culturally distinctive Pokémon region — island-challenge instead of Gyms, Z-Moves instead of Mega Evolution, four Tapu guardian deities instead of a single Legendary, and regional variant forms of Pokémon from other regions. Its cuisine, architecture, and spiritual traditions all derive from a tropical island-chain culture. Professor Kukui leads its academic side; the four kahunas lead its traditional side. The region underwent three major transformations during the Sun & Moon anime: the Ultra Beast crisis nearly unmade it; the founding of the Alola League gave it its first regional tournament; and Ash Ketchum, a tourist, became its first official Champion. It is the setting of the anime's chibi-art-style era, which made the whole region look softer and rounder than its predecessors.
