Team Rocket in Alola are barely trying to steal Pikachu anymore — they are, functionally, a long-form slice-of-life subplot about three adults on a tropical working vacation. They have an adopted Bewear. They compete in local contests. James catches a Mareanie that loves him. Jessie wins karaoke nights. They sometimes remember they are supposed to be villains and make some gesture at it, which fails. They are nominally a three-person cell of Giovanni's organization, and they report back to HQ in Kanto from time to time with embellished accounts of their progress. Giovanni has stopped reading the reports. It is the happiest any of them have been in years.
Three-member unit: Jessie (magenta-haired woman), James (lavender-haired man), and Meowth (the talking cat). All three wear the white Team Rocket uniform with the red 'R,' though they adopt bizarre Alolan disguises constantly — hula skirts, sun hats, straw wigs. Their iconic Meowth-shaped hot-air balloon lurks above most scenes, until it crashes.
