Rotom Dex

Character from pokemon-alola by

A Rotom possessing a talking Pokédex — Ash's closest non-battler companion, a screen with opinions.

Rotom Dex — 'Rotom' to its friends — is incapable of being quiet. It narrates, summarizes, footnotes, corrects, gossips, and fact-checks every conversation it is near. It introduces itself to every Pokémon Ash meets by rattling off their entry unprompted, which has gotten both of them attacked. It also has genuine affection and genuine fears — it panics about being out of battery, cries when Ash leaves it behind, and considers itself a full member of the team. Its contributions to the group are incalculable. It identifies Ultra Beasts on sight. It documents every new Pokémon the class encounters. It keeps an internal archive of battles, which Kukui uses for research. It argues with Togedemaru over screen brightness. It is the single piece of technology that most defines the modern Pokémon world, and it never shuts up. When the class briefly believes Rotom has sacrificed itself for them, the grief is genuine. When it returns, the relief is even more so.

Appearance

A red-and-white handheld device about the size of a paperback book, with two cartoon eyes on its screen and a wide grin beneath. Small lightning-bolt antennae jut from the top and sides. Floats permanently via the orange Rotom plasma inside. Screen animates expressively — grins, pouts, glares, gasps — when it speaks.

Also known as: Rotom, Rotomdex, Rotom Pokédex
