Mallow

Character from pokemon-alola by

The class's cook, the class's matchmaker, the class's reckless heart — a Grass-type specialist whose mother is gone and whose kitchen is sacred ground.

Mallow is the one who notices first — that someone hasn't eaten, that someone is crying, that a Pokémon is lonely, that Team Skull grunts are bullying a Stufful. She acts before she thinks, which makes her the most dangerous Grass-type user in the class and also the one most likely to get her friends into trouble. She argues with shopkeepers, she barters with kahunas, she insists on feeding people. Beneath the energy is grief she doesn't talk about. Her mother died of illness when Mallow was small, and the last words Mallow said to her mother were angry ones. Tsareena, her strongest Pokémon, was her mother's — caught for Mallow as a Bounsweet in a final gift she barely remembers receiving. She cooks with her mother's recipes, uses her mother's herbs, runs her mother's section of the kitchen at Aina's Kitchen. She has made peace with the absence in the way children do — which is to say, not really, but functionally enough to keep going. She briefly befriended the Mythical Shaymin, which let her know it was okay to be forgiven.
