Kahuna of Melemele Island — a mountain of a man who wrestles Pokémon for sport and gave Ash his first grand trial.

Hala speaks slowly, laughs loudly, and picks people up to hug them. He is the most purely welcoming adult Ash meets in Alola, which does not at all diminish the fact that he is one of its strongest trainers. His Hariyama has taken down challengers twice its size. His Crabominable punches through stone. As Melemele's kahuna, he runs the Iki Town festival and administers the first grand trial to trainers attempting the island challenge. He gave Ash an Electrium Z after Ash defeated him, publicly validating Tapu Koko's choice. He is also Hau's grandfather and Guzma and Kukui's former mentor — which means his house contains a great deal of unresolved history.

Appearance

Enormous older man with a thick white mustache and topknot, deeply tanned skin, and strong arms bared in a yellow vest over a sash. Wears loose traditional Alolan ceremonial pants and sandals. Carries himself with slow, unhurried authority. Hariyama and Crabominable stand behind him like bodyguards.
