Ash in Alola is looser than he has ever been — less single-minded than his Sinnoh self, less intense than his Kalos self, a kid on extended vacation who doesn't realize he's actually growing up. He laughs easily, eats enormous amounts of Mallow's cooking, and shows up to class late for reasons he'll describe as 'very important' without elaborating. He is also, quietly, the strongest trainer in the room. His instincts for battle outstrip his classmates' by years — he hears when a move is about to turn, reads body language on Pokémon he's never met, improvises under pressure. He teaches Kiawe to relax, teaches Lillie to try, teaches Gladion to listen. He doesn't realize he's doing any of it. He's frightened of things he shouldn't be — Pheromosa's speed, Lusamine's eyes, the sound Nihilego makes — and unafraid of things he should be, like walking into Ultra Space because Nebby needs him to. When the Alola League final comes down to his Lycanroc against Gladion's, he does not celebrate at first. He stares at the scoreboard, Pikachu on his shoulder, and has to be told he won.
Shorter and rounder than his older designs, rendered in the softer, cartoonier 'chibi' style the series adopted for Alola. Wears a blue-and-white striped Alolan shirt, black-and-red cap, red shorts, and green-soled shoes. Pikachu rides on his shoulder or atop his head almost constantly. A Z-Power Ring sits on his left wrist like a bracelet made of stone.
