Red's Venusaur — the stubborn, powerful Grass-type starter who won Red the Pokémon League championship and later gained Mega Evolution capability.
Saur was Red's starter Pokémon, given to him as a Bulbasaur by Professor Oak. Described as 'somewhat stubborn,' Saur matches Red's determination with his own willfulness — they argue as much as they cooperate, but in battle they're perfectly synchronized. Saur's victory over Blue's Charizard won Red the Indigo League championship, establishing their partnership as the manga's defining trainer-Pokémon bond. In later arcs, Saur gained the ability to Mega Evolve, and Red trained under Ultima to teach Saur Frenzy Plant, the ultimate Grass-type move.
