He doesn't rely on raw power alone; he reads the battlefield, exploits type matchups creatively, and trusts his Pokémon absolutely. Despite his battle prowess, Red is sometimes slow to pick up on sensitive matters — he was the last of the original Pokédex holders to realize Yellow's true gender.
