Professor Elm is New Bark Town's resident Pokémon researcher, specializing in Pokémon breeding and evolution — fields that directly connect to Gold's hatching abilities and Green's evolution expertise. When Silver stole his Totodile, Elm initially suspected Gold, setting their antagonistic first meeting. He provides the three Johto starters and supports the Pokédex holders with research throughout the GSC arc. Less adventurous than Oak, Elm prefers his lab but rises to the occasion when Johto is threatened.
