Lance is not the noble Champion of the games — in the manga, he is the Yellow arc's primary antagonist, a Dragon Master who genuinely believes that humanity's destruction is the only way to save Pokémon. He leads the Elite Four's conspiracy from Cerise Island, using a badge energy amplifier and legendary Pokémon to attempt genocide on a continental scale. His Dragonite is devastatingly powerful, and his ability to control and communicate with Dragon-type Pokémon borders on supernatural. He fought both Giovanni and Yellow, and it took Yellow's full Viridian Forest power amplification to defeat him and prevent his plan from succeeding. Despite his extremism, Lance's motivations are tragically understandable — he's witnessed genuine cruelty toward Pokémon and concluded that coexistence is impossible. After his defeat, he appears in later arcs with a more tempered perspective.
