Giovanni is the manga's most complex antagonist — not a cackling villain but a calculating strategist who genuinely loves his son Silver while running a criminal empire. As both Team Rocket's boss and Viridian City's Gym Leader, he operates in the shadows while maintaining a public facade. He possesses the same Viridian Forest psychic powers as Yellow, giving him an innate connection to Pokémon. In the RGB arc, he tested Red by disguising himself as a researcher before revealing himself at the Viridian Gym. During the Yellow arc, he fought Lance on Cerise Island — not out of heroism, but because the Elite Four's plan to destroy humanity would eliminate Team Rocket's customer base. In the FRLG arc, he captured Deoxys and fought Red's Mewtwo, but his primary goal was reconciling with Silver. Their father-son confrontation is one of the manga's most emotionally charged scenes. He authored 'Mysteries of the Earth,' documenting Ground-type evolution secrets.
