Blaine is the manga's tragic scientist — a former Team Rocket researcher who created Mewtwo by combining Mew's DNA with his own human cells when there wasn't enough genetic material. This fusion gave him a psychic bond with Mewtwo, allowing him to track the clone, but the alien cells were slowly killing him. He sought Red's help to capture Mewtwo with the Master Ball, beginning their alliance. During the Yellow arc, Blaine partnered with Yellow against Lance, though his deteriorating health limited his effectiveness. He was only cured when the legendary Entei used its Flames of Life to burn the Mewtwo cells from his body, severing their connection permanently. Despite his guilt over creating such a dangerous being, Mewtwo eventually returned to him as a willing partner, capable of Mega Evolution in later arcs.
